How do vitamin D supplements affect the bones?

Taking vitamin D supplements does not have a positive effect on bone health. The largest review on this topic so far comes to the conclusion that a frequently recommended intake of vitamin D over the winter months is not really necessary if those affected want to improve the health of their bones.

The University of Auckland and Aberdeen University scientists found in their current joint study that vitamin D supplements do not improve bone health. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology".

What was the result of the current investigation?

The large meta-analysis, which was compiled from 81 separate studies, found that there is no evidence of the positive effects of taking vitamin D supplements on bone health, except for people at high risk for some rare diseases. It is often advised that people should take a vitamin D supplement for bone health in the winter months, according to the authors, this does not seem to be necessary. Over 30 randomized controlled trials on vitamin D and bone health have been published in the past four years, which have almost doubled the available evidence base, said study author Professor Mark Bolland of the University of Auckland. The current meta-analysis shows that vitamin D neither prevents fractures, falls, or improves bone mineral density, whether at high or low doses, the expert adds.

Further investigations pointless?

Further studies on the effects of vitamin D on bone health are superfluous, the doctors say. Based on the evidence available, the researchers believe there is little justification for further studies of vitamin D supplements that address musculoskeletal results.

Where do we normally get our vitamin D from?

Everyone needs vitamin D. But the question is whether vitamin D should be consumed through food supplements. Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body as a result of exposure to sunlight. It is also found in a small number of foods, such as cod liver oil, offal, egg yolk and oily fish including salmon and mackerel.

Vitamin D supplements help people with rare diseases

The studies evaluated were mostly carried out on older people who may have an increased risk of osteoporosis. But there is no evidence of benefit in adults, apart from people who are at increased risk of osteomalacia, a form of rickets in adults, the researchers report. The statements made by the scientists do not apply to children or adolescents because there was a lack of studies. The reason for the analysis of the different studies is that many patients and doctors have been convinced by previous studies and (social) media that vitamin D is a panacea. However, this has not been confirmed in terms of bone health. (as)
